You have to save the files in MS Office format i.e. .doc or .xls etc. However, another thing you may want to consider is a portable version of OpenOffice that you can run from your flash drive. It's available from http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable. You can then plug in your flash drive and run OpenOffice on any Windows computer that's capable of running OpenOffice.
