You have to save the files in MS Office format i.e. .doc or .xls etc. 
However, another thing you may want to consider is a portable version of
OpenOffice that you can run from your flash drive.  It's available from
http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable.  You can then
plug in your flash drive and run OpenOffice on any Windows computer
that's capable of running OpenOffice.  You may want to browse around
that site, as they have several other portable apps.
