It creates html files, and as someone else said, it can only do the basic stuff, so there are better ones out there.
The other applications do the following Writer is a wordprocessor, like MS Word, Word Perfect etc. Calc is a spreadsheet program, like MS Excel and Lotus 1-2-3. Base is some kind of database manager, which I didn't use myself so far. Math is used when you want to create math stuff. Making it look right. Impress is used for presentations, like MS PowerPoint.
