Hi,
This has become an issue on a writing list I am using. I need to export
my files to text, but the problem is that it also exports the smart
quotes. Is there any way to turn this option off. Note: I do not want
to get rid of smart quotes for the odt document, just the text export.

You cannot turn this option off per se, since this is really not an option. If you have the curly quotation mark characters in your test, then naturally that is what will be normally saved.

But what you can do is to save to a text file in a character set that doesn't contain fancy quotation marks. Then these fancy quotation marks will be replaced on save by normal typewriter-style ASCII quotation marks.

To do this, save using File -> Save as .... When the dialog box appears, select "Text Encoded (txt)" in the "Save as type:" box. Another dialogue box then appears. Select "Western Europe (ISO-8859-1)" from the "Character set" box. All curly quotation marks will become straight quotation marks on save.

To set your original text back to normal, either close it without saving or save again as an .odt file.
