The icon on the desktop is a folder containing the installtion
files. Have you looked in Start > All Programs for OpenOffice.org? If
you have installed OOo, there should be a listing there. (I am
assuming you are using Win XP. If this is not true, please reply with
the operating system you are using.)
If OpenOffice.org is not listed in Start > All Programs (Start >
Programs in early Windows OS's), you have not installed OOo on the
computer. Double click this desktop icon to open the folder
containing the installation files. Double click setup.exe, which is
near the bottom of the list of files. Installation should then begin.
If you want to have a desktop icon for Writer, locate it in the
Start menu under All Programs. Right click its icon and drag and drop
it to the desktop. A popup menu will ask you what you want to do.
Select the Create shortcut item.
