Are there any good working windows ports of evolution? I found one but it
looks like that project is dead now.

This sounds like the same problem as with Seamonkey. See:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=64151

Take a look at the patch for that and the senddoc file to see if perhaps
you need to modify. BTW: OOo 2.1 works with Evolution with no
modifications necessary.
