Hello:
I am enrolled in a basic statistics course. I am not computer literate, but
I am trying to use Open Office Calculator. I need help finding and starting
wizards for data analysis. I need to be able to calculate arithmetic mean
and median; first quartile and third quartile; range; interquartile range;
variance; standard deviation; coefficient of variation; and other functions. I
tried to use Open Office "Help", but still cannot figure out where to start.
I also need to create tables for my results, using correct formulas in the
function bar. Please help me. Is there any way to convert the Open Office
application for use with Excel programs?
Thank you,
yvette
Yvette: Everything that you listed can be done, relatively easily, using
Calc. First, though, you need to have at least some basic understanding
of how functions work in Calc (or in Excel, they work nearly
identically, so if you understand one, you understand the other).
I'm going on the assumption that you do have some understanding of
functions.
A very valuable tool to get familiar with is the Function Wizard. This
is the f(x) icon on the formula toolbar (it appears right above the "B"
column heading on my display). If you click that, you get a list of all
Calc functions. To zero in on what you need, under Category, select
Statistical, so it will show only the statistical functions.
Click on any function name, and it will give you a one-sentence summary
of what the function does. When you find the function you want, click
Next, and it will help you construct the function properly.
Specifically, the functions that you want, for the statistical terms
that you listed, are:
arithmetic mean -- AVERAGE
median -- MEDIAN
first quartile and third quartile -- QUARTILE
range -- MAX minus the MIN
interquartile range -- use the QUARTILE functions; calculate the 1st
and 3rd quartiles, subtract to get the interquartile range
variance -- VAR
standard deviation -- STDEV
coefficient of variation -- this is the STDEV divided by the AVERAGE,
times 100 to convert to a percentage
