I have a 250-page Word document (Office 2000 version) that was written by
somebody who
no longer works for the company. I want to begin maintaining that doc (first
of many) in OOo 2.1.

The Word document does have styles applied - they're just not the same
styles (by name) as the ones in our OOo template.

How can I smoothly import with the least re-work?

I thought I'd heard that importing of Word docs worked better if the styles
in both Word and
OOo had matching names. But I can't seem to rename the styles in Word.
Tools > Templates and Add-ins... gives an option to rename styles, but
apparently that's
not really what happens. Instead, you get "old-name, new-name", which seems

to be some sort of aliasing for styles.... not actual renaming.

I don't want to get into re-naming OOo styles, since we have a company
naming standard
that would break.

Is there a nifty little HowTo, or some explicit search terms that I should
be using in
the archives?

I tried the "OpenOffice.org Writer Guide", but apparently my task is not
basic enough to be covered.

Thanks,

Kevin in Ottawa
