Perhaps you have a borked install? What segmentation failure are you
referring to, and where are you trying to run ./soffice from?

/opt/openoffice.org2.1/program ./soffice

works just fine for me. /opt/openoffice.org2.1/ is where my OOo 2.1 is
installed.

What linux distro & kernel are you running?
