Change the wrap style to "Through, in background".
Select the image (left click). Right click > Wrap > Through, in background.
Text will now flow over the picture as if it wasn't there at all.
You do have to be careful: it can be tricky to work with the text that
covers the picture, as you can still select the picture when you click
on it. You may want to set the protection options for the image (Right
click > Picture > Options). That won't stop you from selecting it
inadvertently but it will prevent any damage when you do.
If you want to place text at specific places relative to the image (e.g.
to align with the fields on the check), I would use the graphic text box
(Drawing toolbar, "T" icon).
