It should also be noted that the MS Office Suite *does not* include: FrontPage, Visio, or Project. Those are separate products. See: http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/products/FX101635841033.aspx You can better review the product information for OOo here: http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html http://www.openoffice.org/product/more.html The creation of MS Publisher was/is primarily to allow the use of frames and styles; both of which are already solidly supported and built into OOo Writer. Further, MS Publisher files are not (at least on older versions - I don't know about Publisher 2007) comparable/interchangeable with MS Word. What this means is that you create a nice trifold brochure in Publisher, but cannot directly import it and use in Word simply because Word (at least older versions) doesn't support frames properly. I (and many others) still have older Publisher files that can only be properly edited using Publisher. I can "edit" the "story" (text) in Word, but cannot do so in a Publisher frame. In OOo Write the frames are already there, so there is no need to export to an outside program to edit. So for simple comparison purposes, Writer can be considered to be a combination of Word and Publisher. Costs: OpenOffice: 0$ - you can download and immediately start using even on a corporate scale. It is free to use. From the OOo presentation on http://www.openoffice.org/product/more.html: How free is ‘free’’? o Free to use -- e..g.. download via the internet o Free from license fees o Free to give away to friends, family, employees, students... o Free to choose the computers you use: Microsoft systems, Linux systems, Sun Solaris, and Mac OS X under X11 o Free up your hard disk -- Microsoft Office format documents take up to twice the disk space! o Free for developers to enhance with open--source code, published APIs and file formats o You're free to use your legacy Microsoft Office files MS Office/Project/Visio: http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/products/FX101754511033.aspx [extensive license restrictions apply] Frontpage: http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/frontpage/FX100743231033.aspx <quote> What happened to FrontPage? After nine years of being an award-winning Web authoring tool, FrontPage will be discontinued in late 2006. We will continue to serve the diverse needs of our existing FrontPage customers with the introduction of two brand-new application building and Web authoring tools using the latest technologies: Office SharePoint Designer 2007 for the enterprise information workers and Expression Web for the professional Web designer. </quote> Added points: Woolworths are free to customise the OOo code to suit your own custom applications.
