Please refer to it as Impress not PowerPoint.
I think what you are looking for is the Slides pane. If it has
disappeared, use View > Slides Pane to make it reappear.
I also recommend you go to
http://documenation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/ and look in
the Getting Started Guide list of chapters. It might be worth your
while to download the "Getting Started with Impress" chapter in that
list. It will have instructions and illustrations on the basics of
Impress.
