Hi, thanks for the quick reply.
I intended to tell the version of OO but somehow I forgot. It's 2.0.4,
the one supplied in Kubuntu's repos. For some reason I didn't even think
of a version upgrade. Inspired by your reply I tried to upgrade it from
Kubuntu's repos. The about dialog still says it's 2.0.4, but apparently
the upgrade *did* help. I wasn't able to reproduce the crashes anymore
in a quick test.
If the problem still pops up I'll try a fresh non-distro-specific
version from openoffice.org. If the problem persists after that I'll
report on this list.
Thanks a ton for helping! Perhaps I will now survive the laboratory
courses at school :)

(Knowing version of OO would help.)
I suggest using trying 2.1 from www.openoffice.org (not distro-specific one).

Subject: [users] Crashing when adding an image to text document
Hello,
I tried to search the lists but found no description of a
similar problem.
I'm getting frequent crashes that I can easily reproduce. I
just need to add an image to the document and try to save it,
and most likely writer crashes at this point with a SIGSIEV
signal. If it doesn't, it usually crashes when I add an image
caption and then try to save, or just click on the image.
Occasionally the same applies to adding formulas.
Sometimes I'm able to trick the software into accepting my
images but it's just too much of a burden.
The images are generally monochrome png images created with
Matlab, Dia or Eagle, but from quick testing I'd say the
problem exists for every type of images.
I'm not sure if this is a bug in OO or some other software.
My OS is Kubuntu Edgy with version 2.6.17 of the kernel.
Any ideas are appreciated.
