Your assumption is not correct.  There is a team trying to build OpenOffice.org 
for the X64 platform.

Your troubles may be the same as that of the person who reported the problem.  
Here is the issue number:
59826.

Please look at this issue.  It would be nice to confirm that this issue exists 
on more than X64 Edgy.
