That is common in most modern mail clients. To each their own... I just can't see downloading hundreds of emails each day & would rather selectively download & view only posts that are of interest to me. In a newsreader if I come across a large "[Moderated]" thread for instance that I have no interest in, I simply right-click & mark the entire thread as "read", or mark the thread as "ignore". I then don't download anything (other than the headers of course) for that thread. I subscribe to many lists via gmane, and to down load each one on a daily basis would keep my internet link and email client busy all day long. Further, then I'd need to go to each one, figure out the thread, etc., etc. Even using a forum is a pain... you need to log in each time, search the forum, can't view by threads (for the most part) etc. For me using a newsreader is the *only* way to go.
