OOPS! just found a relevant thread "Find/Replace a paragraph break?" from mid-August 2006 which refers to the faq:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/faqs/word_processing/016.html where there is a note that "Regular expressions do not appear to work in the Replace field." Based on a post in that earlier thread from G. Roderick Singleton, I tried variations of \0x000A, \0x0A, 0x000A, 0x0A, but none worked. So, my answer to myself is "No (stupid), there is no current way to replace anything with a line break, or with any control character other than a tab or paragraph break." Perhaps the documentation could be modified to say that \n \t and \& are the _only_ regular expressions that work in the Replace field. (However, that won't help for those like me who cannot even find a relevant thread in the archives.) A better solution would be to add the ability to specify arbitrary hex characters, as well as regular expression matches in the Replace field as a future enhancement. --Steve Singer Steve Singer wrote:
I have searched the archive and not found this question answered. The reverse process is accomplished by turning on regular expressions and inserting "\n" in both the _find_ and _replace_ text boxes. I have tried \x000D and \x000A as replacements, but those strings then appear literally wherever a replacement occurs. Is there a way to do this? (apologies if I missed a prior post answering this questions).-Steve Singer
