Harold:

I guess I misinterpeted what you are doing. I had moved all moderated messages
into a separate
folder under Thunderbird. This DOES break threading. If you use something
else to mark them, then
that is something you are doing.

And to find that mystical value you have to look at the entire header. As I
stated, with Earthiink's mail headers
this may extend outside of the header buffer area and much to my surprise,
Thunderbird does not allow scrolling
with all headers shown (or at least it did not when I last looked at it.)

In any case, it is up to the individual reader on how they handle messages and
replies from and to unsubscibed
people. Don't forget that folks sending through GMANE will also show as
unsubscribed (or at least they used to.)

This is my point with headers in Thunderbird. You cannot just turn

This is just flat out nonsense.

In Thunderbird you can set a filter that stipulates that if a message has a "Delivered-To: " header *and* that header says "moderator for [email protected]" (or whatever) then highlight the message in red (or green or blue or ...). This does *not* involve moving or copying the message to a different mailbox or folder and it does not involve breaking any threads. It also does not invlove looking at the headers yourself other than just once to get the correct syntax for the filter. And to save you that trouble, the header name is "Delivered-To: " and the relevant value is "moderator for [email protected]".

Thunderbird has 5 "labels": Important, Work, Personal, To Do and Later. Each label is designated by a different colour.

When you assign a label to a message (select message in its folder and do Message>Label>select label type), its entry in whichever folder it appears is coloured for that label. So, if you label a message "Work", its entry in its folder will show up red.

You can set a filter that says "if the message has the 'Delivered to' header *and* that header says 'moderator ... ' then label the message 'Work'.

You only set the filter once. It operates on *all* incoming message unless you explicitly and with great care tell it otherwise; it's hard to do by accident so the chance is vanishingly small that you will screw it up.

So, once you have set up the filter *all* messages from unsubscribed OPs will appear in red (not the message text, just the one-line entry within the folder (Subject, Sender, Date, etc.).

Repeat. You only need to do this ONCE (yes, I'm shouting; it's deliberate). It takes two minutes or less. After that ALL messages (yes, shouting again) and ONLY messages from unsubscribed OPs will appear in RED (assuming you chose the "Work" label.

It doesn't break threads; it doesn't involve moving or copying messages to other folders; it doesn't involve manually examining the message headers. Once set up it involves no work at all to see that a message is from an unsubscribed OP.

If you don't like red because you are colour blind you can change the colour assigned to the label, or you can select a lablel represented by a different colour.

You do NOT need to turn on the All Headers view. You don't need enhancements to make the header pane scrollable. That whole discussion is irrelevant.

The filter won't affect any other mail because no other mail is going to have the relevant Delivered To header.

Try it.

PLEASE.

Oh, by the way. I do not, repeat NOT use Thunderbird although this is being sent using it because I'm working at a different computer from the one I usually use while mine is upgraded.
