I use a Linux OS, so the setup is different. The software is run by a shell
script which contains the following verse:

- - - - - quote - - - - -
# file locking now enabled by default
SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING
- - - end quote - - -

I daresay there is a similar provision in one of the programme documents in
Windows. Whether you can effectively unlock documents by changing the
setting, I do not know.

I have speculated about this previously and no one has ever confirmed that
it is possible to hack the software that way. The invariable answer to your
question is that a spreadsheet cannot be edited simultaneously by more than
one author. For such a situation, you should be using a database, not a
spreadsheet.
