     Create a new document that includes at least one word. Use File > 
Save (or Control+S). The window that opens to save the document 
should be labeled Save As. Centered along the bottom of the Save As 
window is a box labeled "Automatic file name extension". It should be 
checked (ticked). If it is not, that is your problem.
