I just tried last night to do the same thing.
2.1 claims that it is finding related components and removing them (I
assumed it meant the 2.0 version). After installation, trying to start
says it can't find
the program. So, I look in detail and this is what the installation did.
The 2.0 directory is still there, with the program soffice.exe and a few
other components in its program directory
The 2.1 directory does NOT have a soffice.exe and several of the other
dlls and python scripts present in the 2.0/programs directory.
copying the soffice.exe, as well as the others into the 2.1 directory
and trying to start gets rid of the "can't find program message";BUT:
now it can't find a required dll . So I do a search for the file: it
isn't present on the hard drive.
SO, I totally remove 2.1; delete the 2.1 directory that is still there
after the uninstall, and then reinstall 2.0
2.0 works fine; AND: the missing dll is in the 2.0 program directory.
So if 2.1 still needed it, it went and removed it during it's installtion.
I don't know if this would have happened if I had totally removed 2.0
first and THEN try using the 2.1 installer; but I didn't have to do that
to install 2.0; it left the 1.x version alone.
I'm sticking with 2.0 for now, as I don't have time to trace it further.

Hi Evan,
I think something has corrupted your installation.
Please try the 'Windows Installer CleanUp Utility' [1]. Then you can
remove your old OOo installation and install OOo 2.1.

Olaf

On Windows XP, it's proven impossible to upgrade from OO2.0 to OO2.1
due to
missing installation and setup/remove files.
OpenOfficeorg20.msi file was erased as was the setup file. Anyone have a
solution? Are the missing files available for download and proper
placement?
