It seems like, as default, the assignment for the delete key is at
OpenOffice.org level, while the assignment for the backspace key is for
Calc/Writer etc individually. In the customize window, keyboard tab, you can
select "OpenOffice.org" or "Calc" (or Writer or whatever application you are
running at the moment).

Calc -> Backspace is assigned to "Delete Contents"
Calc -> Delete is assigned to nothing

OpenOffice.org -> Backspace is assignet to nothing
OpenOffice.org -> Delete is assigned to "Delete Contents"

I also found this:
When trying to assign something to a key, and that key is alrady assigned to
it, then the Change button is deactivated (grayed out), which makes the
whole thing a lot easier.

Yes. You can use Tools >Customise : Keyboard to change the assignments.
IIRC, they are in the "Edit" category. Each is described as "Delete
Contents". I discovered which is which by removing the first assignment
temporarily; all I remember now is that one is first in the list and the
other is second. :-\
