Jo, My apologies as, without intending to, I highjacked your thread,
although I hope that the subsequent discussion may be of use to you in the
future.
I guess that you meant that Base can only import existing data bases and it
certainly looks that way when one initially looks at Starting with Base.
However for a simple DB open Base, Click the Tables Icon and double Click
"create table in design view" you will see two columns in which one defines
the name of the field and the type of field. If, for example, you wish to
give each person a reference number then the first entry could be "Mail Ref"
and the Field Type "Integer". To set this click in the field and select. You
can also make it automatically enter the numbers by setting "auto" at the
bottom to "Yes".
Then just continue down with the fields you wish to include doing as above.
You will need to set one field as the "primary" and if you pick the first
one, right click in the little box before "Mail Ref" and select primary from
the drop down. When done save.
To add data either create a form or double click on the file name you have
just created and fill in the details.
