I made a few impress presentations with openoffice and found that you
can have sound that continues. I had about 4 pieces of music and it kept
playing until the next one was started. The only thing I found (could be
changed, was 1,5 year ago with the at that time brand new openoffice
1.9) that I couldn't use mp3, only .wav, which was a pity because it
made the file so much bigger.
Another thing is that openoffice was rather slow when playing the
presentation and very often the sound doesn't work, so I played it,
after saving it as powerpoint presentation, with the (freely
downloadable from ms) powerpoint viewer, and then it went smooth, fast
and with sound.

Impress only plays sounds during the transitions between slides.
If you want to play music throughout the presentation, run an audio
player with the music while Impress is running the slide show.
