I use the option in Thunderbird to "block loading of remote images... "  I also
have the adblock and Bork extensions.

I have actually set up a special email account to use for openoffice.org lists -
they are the only ones that cause this problem.  For this particular list, I use
nabble and gmane to read and send messages.  For other OOo lists, I have one
address for posting and an unpublished address for receiving.
