None at all. Everything else is fine. > How do you fare if you launch OOo as root (which you probably can't do on > Ubuntu) or as another user? Excellent suggestion! Don't know why it never occurred to me to do that -- error messages can be very revealing. When I launch writer I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ oowriter (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (process:28062): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:28062): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed I have no idea what the problem is, but evidently something is wrong with the OOo code, the line IA__g_type_init() should have been used before gdk_screen_get_font. However, it doesn't seem to affect OOo -- it launches and runs fine anyway. If someone knows more about this I'd like to hear it, just in case this is related to the drag and drop of text problem. So here is a brief synopsis of what I have done: First I opened Synaptic and did a search on "java" and uninstalled everything. Then I did a search on "openoffice" and uninstalled all of it as well. Then I renamed the ~/.openoffice.org2 folder by appending .old to it, just in case something in my personal settings was causing the problem. And then I reinstalled OOo using just the metapackage so I would have all the essentials but none of the extras. There are four wizards that did not work, letter, fax, agenda and web. The web wizard crashes OOo, but the others just didn't work. After the reinstall the first three worked, but the web wizard still crashed OOo. I noted that the reinstall set up Free Software Foundation Java. So then I installed more Javas, and each time used "sudo update-alternatives --config java." I started with Sun Java 6 (it's in the backports), tried OOo again but none of the four wizards would do anything at all; installed Sun Java 5, tried again and the first three worked, but the web wizard still crashed OOo. Finally I installed ia32-sun-java* for 5 and 6, but no change. Then I installed Blackdown, but still no change. At this point I have all the web wizards working with any Java except Sun 6, with the exception of the web wizard, which still crashes OOo. I don't care about the web wizard anyway, so I'm leaving that alone. It might be nice to figure out what is wrong, though. Regarding the database: As long as any of the Javas is installed and set up in Tools > Options > Java, I can open the database file. But when I go to access its only table I get "unable to load content." But eventually I right-clicked on it and chose Edit instead of Open, and the table editing window opened up. And then I immediately noticed that the field names are messed up. So the database is corrupt. However, just in case there is something wrong with the way 2.0.4 Base opens a table created in 2.0.2 Base, here is a copy of the database that I uploaded several months ago: http://web.pdx.edu/~johj/ I downloaded it but I get the same results. If someone else downloads it and also finds that the field names are messed up, then we will know it is just a case of a corrupted database and not a problem with the OOo Base code. I'm still trying to fix the drag and drop, but that is another topic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
