It is a very simple thing to do, although I do not understand why you do not want to use a footer. When you get to the bottom of the page, move the cursor to where you want the page number. Then use Insert > Fields > Page Number. (If you want this line of the page to be empty, use either the Tab to get to the right side of the page or the Space bar.
