Not 100% sure. Are you positive you don't have the .ppt file open
anywhere else? You can try selecting the icon that is about 4 in from
the left hand side and looks like a white piece of paper with a green
pencil. This will make the file editable, if its not.

One other method that will be sure to work is if you 'save as' .odp
format (but that may defeat the purpose if you were wanting to keep
maximum portability.
