Jonathan:

Please look at the OpenOffice.org Writer window.  You should notice that there 
is an icon on the far left hand side to create a new document.  By clicking on 
this icon, you should get a listing of the other documents that can be created 
by OpenOffice.org.  If you click on the next icon (it looks like a folder 
opening) you can open any document that OpenOffice.org will read.  This 
includes files created by Microsoft Office 2003 or lower.  We are working on 
Office 2007 compatibility but this takes time and all of the developers are 
volunteers, working in their free time.
