I had the same problem with SAMBA server and opening OOo files. I found that the problem was that OOo has problems when the server requests authentication by a user-name and a password. You have to be logged/authenticated as a smb and linux user on the SAMBA server, and get the authentication dialogue box open and take your name and password properly. I somehow got it to work on my smb mounted SAMBA server, but not with NFS mounts yet. I have the problem now that OOo dies when I enter the wrong authentication password or name.
