[users] Converting excel docs to calc

I have been working with Excel Files using Open Office Calc with enjoyable 
success. I have probably screwd up and will need to restart my project but here 
is my question: How do I open Excel lists with Calc coming from a cd I copied 
them onto? They are parts price lists that are created in Excel and saved on a 
cd. When I brought the cd home, I couldn't open them in anything but Writer. So 
I can't manipulate the data.How do I get them to open in Calc?
