Yes, I tried it in Writer, but it didn't work. Maybe it works with some other key combination than Alt+x?
Also, I guess it should be possible to write a macro to be called with some key combination, that examines the characters just typed and converting them to a unicode character. But the technique you outline here seems to me of great interest, not least because it also works in Word. Did you try it in OOo as well ?... 傢, by the way, in modern Chinese is mainly replaced by 家 (Unicode hex : 5bb6 - a pig under a roof), which has the basic meanings «house», «home», «family» ; in classical Chinese the former can be a term of abuse or refer to a certain type of weapon or to a domestic animal....
