There IS a way to insert a blank line before a table which is at the top
of a document. It doesn't seem like this should work, but it does, try
it and verify for yourself.
Put the insertion point at the left edge of the top left cell in the
table. Then press Enter. A line has now been inserted above the table.
An interesting thing is that this only adds a line above the table if
there is no line currently there (in other words, if the table is at the
very top of the document). If there is already a line above the table,
this does not add another line above the table, but instead does what
you'd probably expect it to do (adds a line within the table cell).
