[users] Cannot find how to remove duplicates from spreadsheet

I'm using OpenOffice.org 2.1, and have spent "Seven" hours trying to learn how 
to remove duplicate entries/names from a spreadsheet. I cannot open a database 
to use as it states I don't have a Java Runtime Environment. HELP!
