Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately, I the problem isn't the Quickstarter, 
as that was the first thing that I disabled after installing the program.  
Strange thing is, I never had problems with the option settings using Win98, 
only with WinXP.

Quickstarter which gets in the way when one tries to have OO remember 
option settings. If it is running on your XP system there will be an 
icon for it in the System Tray (probably bottom right of your screen). 
The icon will be blue/grey and have flying birds, the sort drawn by 
kids, on it. Right click on the icon and choose Exit. Then open Writer 
from the Start>All Programs>OpenOffice menu, change your settings and 
close Writer. Now when you open Writer again (same method) your options 
should have "stuck".
