I have produced what I thought were 'Letterhead' templates in Draw
(.odg and .otg files).

Firstly I do appear to be able to use them in Writer and they
continue to open as .odg files so I can't just type a
straightforward letter onto the template.

I also need to 'convert' the .odg or .otg file to a Word .doc or
template (for someone else to work with).

I have tried everything that I can think of within OpenOffice to
sort these points out, but nothing seems to resolve it.

Please can you assist me (in simple terms..)? I would be very
grateful.

It would seem that you have created the wrong type template. If you are creating a letterhead, you need to do so in a text document (Writer) rather than Draw. Have you considered copy and pasting the graphic you created in Draw into the Header of a text document? Then you can save this text document as a template (*.ott) file.
