Thanks for all your suggestions Dan. They work fine but unfortunately
they are not a solution to my problem. I wanted to get rid of editing by
hand the header each time a file was modified. I am sorry that the word
"automatically" did not appear in my first enquiry. So I reformulate my
problem now in a more precise way as follows:

For spreadsheets I would like to program the header in such a way that
when the spreadsheet is displayed in page preview mode or is printed the
header shows automatically the file modification date without me editing
each time by hand the modification date in the header.

I would appreciate any further suggestion.

Thanks and kind regards,
Thomas.

Perhaps doing it in a completely different way might work. This is
based upon OOo 1.1.4 which should be similar to 1.1.5.
Use File > Page Preview to view what it should look like when
printed. In the Page Preview toolbar, you should have "Format Page"
and "Close Preview" as the two right entries. Click "Format Page", and
then click the Header tab. Near the bottom of that window, you should
see two buttons: "More", and "Edit". Click the Edit button.
Each time you modify the document, you will have to change the date.
You could use the Date icon, but it will always show the current date
which is what you DO NOT want.
There is perhaps an easier way to do this. Use the F11 key to open
the Styles and Formating window. Click the Page Styles icon.
Right click the Default page style (or whatever page style you are
using). Select Modify from the context menu. Click the Header tab, and
then the Edit button. Make any changes in the three areas of the Header
(Left area, Center area, Right area) you need to make. Click OK. Then
click OK again.
