In addition to Paul's answer. Regarding "MS specific stuff", you should
be aware that if your MS files (e.g. Excel spreadsheets) contain macros,
these will not function in OOo, although they can be retained in a file
edited with OOo.

MS macros are written in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and OOo
macros are written in Star Basic. The syntax is very similar, but are
not directly interchangeable.
