GIMP might be somewhat complicated to use sometimes, but when the task is as simple as croping pictures, there shouldn't be any problems. Very easy. Just click the crop tool (looks like a scalpel) and the rest of the process should then be obvious. I just love it. They also have a mailing list such as this one. It's Open Source, freeware and multi platform.
