Hi list,
Huh, I've got 25000+ WP8 files (text documents only, no quatro) residing in a
huge Linux(SuSE9) box, all waiting to be converted in the best way possible
to OO format.
I can open them (most of them) in OO and do a manual conversion. This looses
some formatting and so, but all in all acceptable. But the number of docs are
too great to do manually. And the people working at the place would prefer to
ditch MS/WordPerfect in one big go..
Any ideas?
First, why do you need to convert the files? Why not just leave them as
is, switch to OpenOffice and simply open them as and when necessary;
just remember, after changing a file, to save it in OO format (although
it's not strictly necessary). That way the documents that are needed
first get converted but the ones that are less "urgent" are still
available for use.
If you really want to convert, do the files have to be editable after
the conversion? If the files, or many of them, need only to be readable,
can you run WP8 from the command line and have it "print" the file to a
PDF "pseudo printer"? Such a file is then viewable with the free Adobe
Acrobat Reader. How many files are left? Is the number small enough to
do the conversion by hand?
Alternatively, there is at least one free program that converts WP to
Word (.doc): www.picturesize.com/wpcvt.htm (Google found it for me).
Having got the files in Word format, you can use OO's conversion wizard:
File>Wizards>Document Converter... which lets you convert whole
directory-trees-full of Word documents.
