As far as I know OpenOffice will not work with any Microsoft spell
checkers. Assuming you are American, or want to use American English,
the OpenOffice you downloaded should be already equipped to check
documents in that language. If you want something different, you need to
install one or more of the many available dictionaries, for different
languages, by doing "File>Wizards>Install new dictionaries".
You can set OO to check all documents in a single language, or different
documents in different (single) languages or individual documents in
several languages depending on the "style" in which the word/paragraph
is written. For example, my installation is set up to check in British
English.
