Hi Jan,

I am using Open Office 2.1
After adjusting a path for templates, I could not start Writer anymore. It
freezes immediately and Windows gives " soffice.bin doesn't respond"
Older versions of OOo were more foregiving with changing that path, I guess.

Actions taken:
- Repaired
- Removed via Software and new installation

The new installation uses the existing data on the user-path.
Assuming you are using Windows, you can find user-path in
  Documents and Settings\[naam]\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\user

Solution:
When you remove that (if OOo incl quick starter is closed) and you start
OOo, it will make a new default user-data.
You might want to keep a backup of the current user-path. Maybe you've some special data there that you want to use again.

HTH
& best wishes,

Cor
