Hi Elliot

I have been working with OOo for a while now. There is one thing that still baffles me. In a table in calc I shade every other row with 10% gray for easy reading on the list I maintain. I then copy paste it into writer so I can add a banner and better formatting. I can't see where one might automatically set a shade pattern for a spreadsheet. Everytime I add or delete a person from my list I have to manually shade and unshade the pattern.

One key to learning OpenOffice.org is styles. And styles will allow you to do exactly what you are asking for.

Create a new style with the background colour/shade you want. You can do this from the Styles and Formatting window (select Format / Styles and Formatting, or just press F11).

Then select the entire column by clicking on the column or row heading (the letter A or B or number 1 or 2 etc), then apply the style to that column or row by double clicking on the style in the Styles and Formatting window.

After doing that, any new rows you add will also be formatted.

I hope this helps. Please ask if you need any clarification.

Ermmmm. Which style should he apply? There seem to be two: odd (or even) numbered rows have a grey background (style="GreyBackground") but the other rows have a white background (style="Default", or "WhiteBackground").

I've played with conditional formatting using =STYLE(IF(2*(INT(ROW(A1)/2))=ROW(A1); "Grey"; "Default")) but any actual values in the cells get wiped away (set to 0) when I apply this. I can't see how to get any further. I also can't see how to have it applied automagically when I insert a new row.

Anyone?
