I am trying to promote OOo and will be giving a presentation to our
computer club in May and need to have all the ammo I can find to
overcome objections such as the compatibility issues when trying to
open files in other formats.

I get the Atlanta Journal Constitution paper on Sunday and there is a
columnist named Bill Husted who writes a popular computer user
column. Last Sunday he was outlining some free software that is
available and when he talked about free office software he stated
that he wished he could recommend free software for office software
but he felt that, even though he gave the Open Office web address,
you should stick with the brand name software. Some body
knowledgeable should have a talk with him.

I searched for his article and it doesn't make much reference to
OpenOffice other than it wouldn't open a file when he needed it. Now
that is an open ended statement. What type of file? Was there a macro?

The key part of the article.

"There is a free alternative ? Open Office at
www.openoffice.org/product/index.html. It has its fans. But I've seen
instances where it could not open a word processing file I needed. For
those who simply want to write documents and are not worried about
compatibility, it's a noble free effort. For others, stick with the
brand names."

I took the time to email Mr. Husted and asked the simple question about the version. He responded to say that it was some time ago. Hopefully he will test the latest version.

I don't know what to think about the situation myself.

I find I need to keep winders on one machine so that my resume does not get mangled when it gets to someone else's winders machine, and so that government and corporate documents don't get mangled when I download them.
