IMHO not really ... it's for spelling -
for more grammar checking you may try this add-in to OOo
[handle with Extension Manager; also possible as stand-alone]:

Also I seem to be unable to get the spellcheck to work.
You may try in Writer: <F1>
(Index) search term: 'spellcheck' -
you'll find much stuff to 'spellchecking' ...
