Hi,
It all depends where you back the file up to.
In OpenOffice click on File -> Open
This will bring up a window that is similar to your My Computer. You
should be able to navigate to your file from there.
Please note if you have saved the file to a CD it will be 'Read only'
which you must change before you can edit the file.

(PS if you would like all Word97 files to open in OpenOffice when you
double click on them then find the file in windows explorer ie
through My Computer. Then right click on it and select Open With ->
Choose Program. Select OpenOffice from the list, and tick the box
that says always use this program to open files of this type. Bear in
mind I have just written those instructions from memory as I don't
have windows. They also assume you're using Windows XP).

This sounds like a file associations problem, but to be honest I
can't see what it has to do with OpenOffice.org
If you open the file in OpenOffice you shouldn't have any problems.
If you have been using Microsoft Word you would be best to direct
your question to Microsoft.
