I just tried it on linux.  There OpenOffice is equipped with the kde file 
dialog (fortenately, this is on opensuse).  I can indeed use this:
webdav://system/webdav which pops up a login/password dialog.  It shows the 
directory and I can access the file.  Than OO.org writer copies the file to 
the local disk and that's about it, no upload :((
http:// does not work.  It's a bit better than I had before, but it is a pity 
that webdav does not work?  Should a enhancement request be opened for this?
I'll try on MS later....
