OpenOffice.org is just the BEST replacement for MSOffice.
I have been using it for over 8 months now, and although I send many files to others that do not have Open Office bu Ms Word, no-one ever compalined, or saw any difference. In fact they can't figure I am not using MOffice, since I use MsOffice fileformats

Just save as .doc (in writer = MsWord) or .xls (in calc = MsExcel)
from the menu FILE > SAVE AS

You can also set OpenOffice to always save as .doc and .xls from the menu
TOOLS > OPTIONS
