We have found that, when saving as .doc or .xls the format (eg, tabs,

saved in OOo and opened in MS office.
This is the reason we started saving as PDF's.

The MS office users now start getting annoyed, because they can not edit
these files. This does not help to try and convert MS office users to OOo.

I agree that the incompatibilities are annoying and do nothing to make
it easy for people to switch over. The problem however is that since
the MS file formats are proprietary OOo developers have had to guess
how it works.

I've personally not found there to be much difference when saving a
document in MS format from OOo and then viewing within MS products. I
would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version (if you are not
running 2.1) and see if that improves the situation.

If you are running 2.1, then it would be worthwhile lodging bugs for
those documents where there are alot of differences. To do this simply
lodge a bug from this link (you may have to register first) :

I have run into a few compatibility issues, not many more than between the various versions of Office that are in use around here so I don't find it a big issue.

On the other hand, if it is important, then the cost of installing OpenOffice is not an issue.
