If you don't need calendar sharing within a network,, then Mozilla
Thunderbird with the Lightning (calendar) extension is very good,
and more than adequate for home users...in fact it has functions
that outlook does NOT have, such as the ability to email alerts and
to subscribe to a calendar on a website....
I've been wondering about this answer and would like a clear easy way
to copy names and addresses from Thunderbird's address book to
letters. Even dear old WordPerfect had a way to do that.

Ron,
You could consider importing the address book into Base and then using it
for your mail merge. I haven't tried this properly, only had a quick look
when starting with Base, but the instructions are given in the Starting with
Base section and seemed to work.
