Phil, you're confusing two different things. There is support for English spell checking, so you are able to create correctly spelled documents: what there isn't presently is support for English in the user interface. In other words we have to put up with mis-spelled words in menus, dialog (sic) boxes and the like, but not in our own documents.
Download the US version of OOo 2.2.0 and the English spell checker is included: you just have to go to: Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages and make the correct choice in the List Box.
