I'm not too sure of my ground here but ...
1. There are two Compability.xcu files - on my XP system anyway. Did you
change the right one? I think the newer one is appropriate; my guess is
that the older one is in OO's own directory and it copies that to your
personal directory when you install the software.
Yes, Ive tried both. It works ok for _new_ files its just when opening
up existing files it seems to get the option from the file somehow.
2. Before changing the file, did you exit the Quickstarter?
Forgot to mention, Im using Linux, so Quickstarter isnt an issue. The
problem seems to be that the metrics option is held inside the
document.
cheers anyway

Sorry, I should have RTFM'd. The Help for Compatibility says
============== begin quote =============
Compatibility
Specifies compatibility settings for text documents. These options help
in fine-tuning OpenOffice.org when importing Microsoft Word documents.
To access this command...
Open a text document, choose *Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org Writer -
Compatibility*
Some of the settings defined here are only valid for the current
document and must be defined separately for each document.
Use printer metrics for document formatting
Specifies that printer metrics are applied for printing and also for
formatting the display on the screen. If this box is not checked, a
printer independent layout will be used for screen display and printing.
If you set this option for the current document and then save the
document, for example, in an older binary format, this option will not
be saved. If you later open the file from the older format, this option
will be set by default.
